Teen Asian sensation Miya Cech is making a big impact on the screen and in the world. Cech is best known for her role as Zu in the film “The Darkest Minds” and as ZhenZhen in Netflix's “Rim of the World”. You can also spot her in one of Netflix’s most popular Rom Com’s, “Always Be My Maybe”, where she plays young Sasha prior to Ali Wong playing the adult version.
“Ali is absolutely a role model for me,” said Cech about Wong. “In addition to being such a talented actress and comedian, she is also an amazingly kind person and a great mom. I love her family.”
She began her career in entertainment as a child model where she shot campaigns for prominent companies like Gap and Ralph Lauren. At about age seven, Cech asked her parents if she could try acting. She said her agency was super supportive and on her second audition, she booked the role of Young Kono on “Hawaii Five-0”, which was a dream role for her as filming took place in Honolulu for ten days. After filming for “Hawaii Five-0”, Cech was hooked to acting.
Her latest project consists of being a member of The Midnight Society featured in a reboot of Nickelodeon’s popular 90’s show, “Are You Afraid Of The Dark”. Throughout the show, you’ll follow members of a whole new Midnight Society, who tell a scary story based on the Carnival of Doom and its evil ringmaster Mr. Tophat. Cech will be playing the role of Akiko.
“I love my character, Akiko in “Are You Afraid Of The Dark”,” said Cech with enthusiasm. “She is strong and sassy, and an aspiring director like me. She has a great sense of fashion and she’s strong-willed.”
The events from the scary story as well as characters actually come to fruition, so prepare for a good chill up your spine. The series will debut on Nickelodeon on October 11 at 7 PM, followed by parts two and three on October 18 and October 25. Make sure to catch Cech and her fellow co-stars in the show!
Although Cech has been in front of the screen for quite some time and has been very successful, she experiences a couple of hurdles here and there, as we all do throughout our lives.
“I think the biggest challenge is that I am my own worst critic and a perfectionist,” she said. “I have had to learn how to be okay with my mistakes and learn from them. I have also learned that when one role does not go my way, it’s always for a reason and another door is opened around the corner.”
Since she is passionate about her job as an actress as well as an aspiring Director, Cech hopes to continue seeing more representation for all ethnicities as well as the LGBTQ community. As a young Asian American actress, she feels like she has the opportunity to inspire and encourage kids as herself to pursue their own dreams.
“I also have the opportunity to use my voice and platform to encourage more kindness in the world,” said Cech.
Like any other individual, Cech has other passions and goals outside of work. Art, biology, and animals are things she absolutely loves. In the art sphere, she enjoys sketching and painting. As for biology and animals, Cech would like to take these two on another level.
“My grandfather, who is an Animal Biologist, has always fostered my love of science,” she said. “So, if I were not acting, I think I’d like to pursue Animal Biology or Veterinary Medicine.”
In addition to art, Cech loves to bake, cook and grow vegetables as well herbs in her garden at home, which reminded me of young Sasha in “Always Be My Maybe”, as she was always cooking her own meals and eventually became a big-time chef once she became an adult.
“I live in the country, so I love to be outside, swim, ride my bike and be a regular kid when I’m not working,” she said in regards to other activities she does for enjoyment. “I love to hang out with my friends and my family as much as possible.”
