There is nothing more satisfying than watching a group of friends come together to save the day. Even when things look grim, we hold onto the hope that our favorite characters will pull through and emerge victorious. And when they do, we’re filled with joy, relief, and maybe even hope—hope that we too will experience extraordinary adventures with our best friends and overcome anything thrown our way. Whether you’re watching films purely for entertainment’s sake or if you’re watching to become inspired, storylines like these will stick with you and remind you that you are never alone.
So, without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the best films about people (oh, and animals, and feelings, and toys) banding together to save the day!
Perhaps one of the greatest Disney movies ever created, Moana tells the story of a young princess who has been tasked with sailing the ocean to retrieve an ancient gem that will restore the mother island of Te Fiti. Because the gem is essentially mother nature’s lifeline, she must move quickly to return it before her homeland crumbles. Along the way, she meets Maui—the demigod who stole the gem from Te Fiti—and the two slowly become an unlikely duo. Complete with hilarious banter, catchy songs, and intense action, this is a movie that never gets old.
2. Toy Story 2
While every single Toy Story film is an absolute masterpiece in its own way, none can capture the theme of coming together quite like the second movie. When Woody is kidnapped by an obsessive toy collector, it’s up to Buzz Lightyear and his friends to rescue him. Terrified by the idea of Woody spending the rest of his days as a museum piece, the gang embarks on a risky, yet thrilling journey to get him back. It’s a movie that you’ll find amazing no matter how old you are, and you’ll always appreciate watching it at different points in your life!
3. The Incredibles
While most of the movies on this list are about friends coming together to save the day, The Incredibles is actually about a family coming together to save the day. When Bob Parr—a.k.a. “Mr. Incredible”—decides that he’s had enough of his boring suburban life, he tries to secretly get back into the superhero industry. However, when a mission goes wrong, his wife is forced to rescue him. When their son and daughter hear that their father is in trouble, they stealthily tag along on the rescue mission and the entire family ends up using their super powers to combat an evil villain.
4. Finding Nemo
Similar to Moana, the two individuals who come together to save the day in Finding Nemo are an unlikely pair. When little clownfish Nemo is captured by a scuba diver, his father Marlin is determined to get him back. After Marlin finds the diver’s scuba mask with Nemo’s location on it, he decides to embark on a journey across the sea to find him. Marlin then runs into Dory, a blue reef fish with short-term memory loss, and apprehensively decides to let her join him in his search. While Marlin and Dory are very different from each other, their friendship is ultimately what leads them to Nemo.
5. Inside Out
When we think of characters coming together to save the day, we often think of heroes embarking on a grand journey to defeat an evil villain. Inside Out is different. In this movie, we follow 11-year-old Riley’s emotional state as she deals with the ramifications of having to move across the country. During the film, we see how her main emotions—Joy, Anger, Sadness, Disgust and Fear—are all affected by difficult events. When Riley’s outlook on life takes a turn for the worse, Joy (Riley’s most important emotion) embarks on a mission to make her happy again. However, she is accompanied by Debbie Downer of the group, Sadness. Through her journey, Joy soon realizes that sometimes happiness and sadness can work together in incredible ways.
6. Ralph Breaks the Internet
The much-anticipated sequel to the movie Wreck It Ralph, this second installation deals with the trials and tribulations of close friendships and the difficulties of letting go. When Princess Vanellope’s game, Sugar Rush, goes out of order, she makes the decision to travel with Ralph to the internet to find the replacement piece that’ll get it back up and running. However, while they are there, Vanellope discovers a new racing game that she likes more than Sugar Rush and Ralph sabotages the game to prevent her from leaving him. While the two were the perfect team when it came to finding the replacement piece for Sugar Rush, this dynamic duo is put to the test when Ralph can’t let go of his best friend Vanellope.
