How To Make Masks Fun

by Delanee Ensley

Masks are unfortunately making a comeback, but never fear; there is a way to make them cute and fun!

Since the Delta variant has made COVID-19 cases rise, wearing a mask is still important for us to do. However, there is a way to turn masks into something you want to wear. Whether that be DIYing your own or ordering your favorite print, making them personalized to your own style is important.

Doing it yourself (DIY) is important when customizing your style. Creating something that is unique to you can make you feel like you have a say in what is going on around you, even when you don’t.

1. Tie-Dye

This 70s style has been making a comeback for a while now! By getting a plain white mask, you can customize it to any color or pattern you want. The only downside to this colorful choice is toxic dyes and the fumes you might breathe in. Fortunately, there are natural dyes you can make yourself for a double DIY! Fruit and vegetables can make the perfect pigment for your mask. All you need is the produce, soda ash, and some boiling water!

2. Fabric Crayons

You might have a specific vision for your mask; luckily fabric crayons are perfect for customization. You can use fabric crayons to draw any design you want on a plain white mask. Just draw your design and iron it out, and you will have a vibrant design you made yourself! Just make sure to wash it by itself the first time, so you don’t accidentally color your whites!

3. Beads, Gems, and Everything in Between

We all remember bedazzling and the glitter that came with it. Though age has taken some of the love of glitter away, there are still fun ways to show your childlike side and design your mask the way you want it. All you need to do is to pick out your materials, get some fabric glue, and start designing. Fabric glue is generally washable, so don’t worry about your sequins falling off in the wash!

If DIY isn’t your thing, don’t worry, there are plenty of creative companies out there! Companies have upped their mask design game in the time of COVID. These are some of the best companies for creative masks!

From popular culture to cute designs, Redbubble has got you covered. Redbubble is a company that allows artists to showcase their designs. By buying from Redbubble, you aren’t only getting something cute, but you are also supporting local artists!

There are plenty of different colors, bundles, and even masks specifically designed for those who wear glasses. All your facemasks in the wash? Not a problem! Barriére makes cute disposable masks in different tie-dye colors. These medical-grade masks are fashionable and cheap. For $24, you can own 10 disposable masks without feeling like you’re giving up your individuality!
