Covid Crafts: DIY Inside

by Delanee Ensley

It’s a struggle to stay inside all day. There are only so many times you can binge-watch a new TV show or scroll through your TikTok feed before you crave something more. Doing something creative may seem boring or dull, but I am here to tell you, you can have fun while crafting!

Building something with your hands is not only fun but can be mentally stimulating. All of these fun and unique crafts can be made with normal household objects, so you don’t even have to leave home to get supplies!

For this craft, all you need is paper and maybe some templates for ideas. Origami has been around since the 6th century and is known as the Japanese art of paper folding. There are many different shapes and animals you can make with just paper! Some of the fun things people have made include cranes and frogs! If you get really into it, there is even special colored folding paper you can buy. Get your folding on!

Paper Chains

There are many fun things you can make with paper chains. Paper chains are easy and only require fun colored paper and staples or tape. This craft requires you to take your paper of choice and cut them into strips. Try to make them even and about an inch in length. After you have your paper strips, take one and curve it into a circle shape and secure it with your fastener of choice. Then take your next strip, put it through the first circle to create a second circle, and attach the ends of the second circle, so the two circles are linked together. Continue this method until you have a chain! You can use your chains to create a countdown calendar or even make a fun wall hanging!

Shoe Decorations

This trend has been going on for years! All you need is a pair of plain canvas shoes and your imagination. Some of the trends people have been following include using fabric markers to draw shapes and designs, using patches to spruce up your kicks, or even tie-dye! Just because you are stuck inside does not mean you have to have boring shoes. Let the creativity flow!

Soap Making

Bath & Body Works is everyone’s dream! Fruity and relaxing scents are heaven! What if I told you that you can make some of your favorite scented soap at home! There are only a few key ingredients you need to make soap at home; lye (this ingredient is not necessarily a household product), your choice of oil (coconut oil, olive oil, or sunflower oil), and essential oils. I am not an expert on making soaps, but this step-by-step article from Insider was very helpful. Though this project is a little more labor-intensive, it feels good to make something yourself, especially when it smells so good!

Slime is squishtastic! This relaxing trend is easy to make and leaves you with something fun to squish and play with. My favorite happens to be glitter slime; it’s super sparkly and easy to make! There are only three main ingredients you will need to add a little sparkle to your life. The first is a bottle of glitter glue. I usually go for Elmers; it’s reliable and comes in super fun colors. The second ingredient you will need is baking soda, and the third is contact solution. After you have all your ingredients, the real fun begins! First, grab a bowl and squeeze your glitter glue in. Add a ½ tbsp of baking soda and mix it in. Then add 1¼ tbsp of contact solution and mix. Stir your concoction until it’s hard, and then get in there and start to knead it with your hands. If it’s still too sticky, add ¼ tbsp more of contact solution until it evens out. Your finished product is going to be a fun glittery mess of slime!

Though the pandemic is frustrating, don’t forget there are fun activities to pursue when you are feeling a little down or bored. Get your craft on!
